Elections Somalia

Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo

The 10th and current president of the Federal Republic of Somalia

The new president has been chosen by lawmakers. After more than a year of infighting and delays, current President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed hoped to retain power. On Sunday, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was elected as Somalia's new president. After three rounds of voting, Mohamud defeated the incumbent, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, in a runoff in an election that had been delayed for almost a year. Members of parliament and senators who chose Mohamud were chosen by clan chiefs' delegates. The president was supposed to be elected by the Somali people via universal suffrage, but the country's political elite finally abandoned that plan.
